Shopping

SHOPPING CENTERS
In Bangkok, they are usually very large with extensive ranges of specialty and often some handicrafts shops, as well as an entertainment area for teenagers and youngsters. Most centers have an area allocated for ‘theme’ sales or promotions.

Shops in most of these centers open daily at 10.00 but some not until 11.00.  Closing time can be as late as 22.00.

 Amarin Plaza Ploenchit Road, near Erawan Shrine. Sogo department store plus lots of shoe shops, jewelry shops, some fashion.

 Big C  (Central Superstore) 96 Moo1, Chaeng Wattana Road.  Shopping mall with good supermarket and bakery. Between Rajdamri Road (opposite World Trade Center); Wong Sa Wang; Rat Burana and Bangphli.  Part of the Central chain.  They will not allow any size of bags into their stores – all must be placed in a locker, so take only your purse with you.

 Charn Issara Tower II New Petchburi Road branch (between Sukhumvit sois 55-63). Limited services – restaurants, beauty/massage centers, etc. There is a ball park for children but it is open only between 15.00 and 17.00; good for after school parties with McDonalds downstairs.

 The Emporium Soi 24 on Sukhumvit Road. Bangkok’s most exclusive mall Open 10.30-22.00. Thee is a number of specialty stores including: Louis Vitton, Versace, etc. Oriental coffee shop, Tower Records, Perfect Portrait, food supermarket, selection of restaurants and takeaways on 5th floor, as well as cinemas on 6th floor.

 Fashion Island Ramindra Road. Very modern, large upmarket shopping center with an excellent branch of Central department store.  Refreshing change of specialty stores and boutiques.

 Future Park Paholyothin Road, Prathum Thani.  Past Don Muang Airport.  Branches of major department stores.

 Gaysorn Plaza Corner Ploenchit and Rajdamri Roads. Very upmarket shopping plaza with outlets of some designer fashion labels (Versace, DKNY, Louis Vutton, etc.).  Also location of Thai Craft Museum and Planet Hollywood.

Home Place Soi 55 (Thonglor) corner Soi 13, Sukhumvit Road.  Small selection of homeware and furniture stores catering to a variety of styles (modern, classic and Thai). Many of the stores do not open before 11.00. There is a pharmacy and some fashion stores.

 Mah Boon Krong Center (MBK) Corner Rama I and Phayathai Roads, opposite Siam Square. Multi-level shopping center, popular with locals for ‘market-style’ general shopping at good, usually negotiated prices. Clothing, especially for teenagers, leather goods, shoes, electronics, jewelry, music, furniture, etc.  Restaurant level (coupon style) on 6th floor. Tokyu department store at northern end.

 Major Cineplex Corner Soi 61, Sukhumvit Road. Cinemas, bowling, restaurants and takeaways, some sport shops. Good for teenagers.

 Narayana Phand Rajdamri Road (opposite World Trade Center).  Great place to take visitors.  Wonderful range of Thai craft items, wood carvings, Blue and White pottery, Bencharong, silver, jewelry, silk, cotton and silk clothing, etc. The bazaar in the basement offers good value products at very negotiable prices.

 Peninsula Plaza Rajdamri Road (next to Regent Hotel). Upmarket shopping complex with large Asia Books and good restaurants on mezzanine floor.

 Ploenchit Centre Soi 2, Sukhumvit Road. Inter-Outlet Store, a factory outlet of export goods, clothing, sport gear, etc. Villa supermarket in basement. Some computer shops, ceramic shops, restaurants, food court. McDonalds and TGI Fridays.

 River City Yotha Road, off Charoen Krung Road (next to Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel). Mostly handicraft, antiques and silk clothing. Auctions of antiques and many exhibitions are held in the grand hall on a regular basis e.g. handicrafts, pots, paintings, etc.  Open 10.00-21.30.

 Seacon Square Srinakarin Road. Large shopping centre and cinema complex. Robinson and Lotus department stores, huge bookstores.  Supermarket in basement is very good and also sells range of items in bulk. Lots of computer and furniture shops, electrical appliances and white goods, as well as everything else.  There is an amusement park for children on the top floor.

 Seri Centre Srinakarin Road (near Seacon Square). Large shopping centre, although not as popular as Seacon Square. Has a lot of computer stores.

 Siam Centre Rama I Road (near Siam Intercontinental Hotel).  Variety of shops and fast food sores: McDonalds, Pizza Hut, etc.

 Siam Discovery Centre next door to Siam Centre.  Large selection of specialty stores covering all areas from fashion to homeware.  Top floor has Kids Sports – a popular ball park/play area which arranges birthday parties and stocks a good range of brand name children’s clothing.

 Siam Square Rama I Road (opposite Siam Centre). In the many sois connecting with two back streets, you will find many clothing shops. A good range for teenagers and children, electrical appliance stores, bookshops and cinemas. Location of Hard Rock Café.

 Times Square between Sois 10-12, Sukhumvit Road (next to Sheraton Grande Hotel). Boutique-style shopping centre, mainly fashion in Thai sizes; imported and local designers e.g. Lacoste, Esprit, Arrow Gallery, and a branch of Asia Books.

 Siam Paragon 991 Rama I Rd. BTS: Siam. T. 0-2610-8000. www.siamparagon .co.th upmarket retail and entertainment centre with a large department store, Gourmet Mart, Power Mall, large cinema complex, IMAX theatre and home to the Siam Ocean World aquarium. Also has a food court reputed to be the largest in the region.  A childred’s play area is located on the 3rd Floor of department store. Check website for full listing of stores and locations.
9.2 DEPARTMENT STORES

In Bangkok there are many modern department stores. The larger chains like Central and Robinson have branches in many locations.  Most department stores are located in shopping centres and there is usually a supermarket or street stalls nearby, which makes these the best locations for parking if you intend to drive yourself around.  Generally open daily from 10.00. Closing hours can be as late as 22.00, especially during ‘sale‘periods.

 Central, Zen and Big C are also Central stores. The largest and most comprehensively stocked chain of department stores in Thailand.

9.3 OPEN MARKETS

Bangkok’s numerous markets have supplies of all kinds of fresh meat, seafood, vegetables and fruit, as well as clothing, household supplies, ceramics, flowers, etc.  Maids generally handle the food shopping at the local markets for you, but if you intend to do your own, then it is a good idea to go with your maid (or a neighbour/friend) the first few times to see how it is done. Bargaining for food purchases is not acceptable.

 AW.TAW.GOR. Food Market Kamphaeng Phet Road (opposite Chatuchak Weekend Market).  Open daily.  Limited parking.  The cleanest and best food market in Bangkok with a large variety of fruit and vegetables that is not found elsewhere.

 Bangrak Charoen Krung Road, between Silom and Sathorn Roads.  Great fresh food market.

 Chatuchak Weekend Market intersection of Paholyothin and Kamphaeng Phet Roads, near the Lad Prao intersection (take the Paholyothin exit off the Expressway).  Open: Sat-Sun 8.00-17.00.  There is a Tourism Authority of Thailand information counter in the parking lot next to Kamphaeng Phet Road and the Thai Military Bank.  Open: Sat-Sun 9.00-17.00.  ATM and money exchange available.  Hot and usually crowded, the market is hard to beat as Bangkok’s most colorful and cheapest shopping adventure.

 Klongtoey Corner Rama IV and Rachadapisek Roads. The biggest and cheapest all day market in the Sukhumvit area. Good fruit, vegetables, meat and seafood, select carefully. Best early morning.  No parking.
 Pak Khlong Talat on the riverside of the northwestern tip of Chinatown. Big, busy, noisy, everyday market. Great range of fresh flowers, sold both wholesale and retail. Parking is difficult.

 Pratunam Ratchaprarop Road from Petchburi Road up to the Indra Regent Hotel. Popular (especially with the locals) for watches, clothing, fabrics, towels, sheets, etc.

 Soi Bank (also called Soi Lalai Sup) Soi 5, Silom Road (next to Bangkok Bang head office). Open: Mon-fri 10.00-15.00. Very crowded 11.45-14.00. Pleasant atmosphere; food, flowers, clothing, leather goods.

 Suan Plu Soi Suan Plu, Sathorn Tai Road. Very good all-day market with wide range of fresh fruit and vegetables, also large variety of meat and seafood. Good prices. No parking. Lots of kitchenware shops in the surrounding area.

 Thong Lor Corner Soi 55, Sukhumvit Road. Small fresh food market.  Mornings only.  Parking in the soi.
9.4 SUPERMARKETS

Most large department stores have well-stocked supermarkets and wine/liquor departments. There is also a vast number of Seven Eleven and am/pm stores throughout the metropolitan area for basic, emergency requirements.

 Emporium (Gourmet Mart).  Very good range of fruits and vegetables – imported, local, organic, pesticide-free.  Large fresh seafood & meat areas; wide range of imported food & gorcery items; excellent delicatessen.  Good for specialty items not found elsewhere.

 Foodland Open: 24 hours.  Excellent range of products, staff are very friendly and helpful. Will pack supplies for upcountry and foreign countries.

 Fuji specialises in catering to the Japanese community (lots of quality seafood). Good for general supermarket needs. Has coffee shop, bakery, photo lab, pharmacy. Parking.

 Soi 39, Sukhumvit Road (Petchburi Road)

 Tops – most Robinson, Central department stores, Basement at Sathorn City Tower, All Seasons Place, Mah Boon Krong, President Park and Miracle Mall have this supermarket.  Also a large branch at Royal City Avenue (RCA).

 Villa Supermarkets – well-stocked, popular supermarket with a wide range of imported and local products. Fresh breads and pastries, meat, poultry and seafood.  Full range of imported and local fresh fruit, herbs and vegetables, some are pesticide free.  Items can be specially ordered. Sukhumvit store has a small pharmacy and upstairs extensive liquor and wine department and sections for magazines, books, stationery, gift wrapping, etc.  Outside the supermarket is a large range of fresh flowers. Will send supplies both upcountry and to foreign countries.
